Sailing South Continued
Next Stop... San Francisco!!!
After a week of holing up dockside in Newport, Or to wait out heavy weather I am chomping at the bit to get going again! Today my newest crew and I leave with the Bay area!
The visit here has been amazing. I was able to spend time with several friends who either live in the area. That felt well worth the detour into Newport in snd of itself! And there is the fact that Newport is truly a lovely little town. I did lots of walking around, found yummy places to eat, enjoyed a beach sunset, played in the water (only up to my knees), and met new and wonderful sailors!
One family got here the day after me after making a 20 day voyage from Hawaii. They were running from the weather system that stopped me in my tracks. They literally got here 24 hours before the 50 mph winds hit. Mom from Spain, dad from England along with their 13 year old daughter and 17 year old son. It's clear the kids have heard many times how lucky they are to have such an adventure as they gave a smile that really said, "Yeah, yeah, yeah... not this again".
My new crew consists of Susan, a woman I met on my first Pacific crossing and Angel, a woman I met on the Facebook group Women Who Sail PNW. It just so happened that she and her husband live on a boat here in the same marina I sailed into. When she originally saw my call for crew that I posted in the group she hesitated to say yes however her excitement grew at the prospect and she jumped on board.
To make it to San Francisco, 450 miles in a direct line (rum line), should take us 3-5 days. Why such a range? Well, because we hope to sail a good amount of the way which requires steady wind and sailboats don't go in a straight line. :-)
I've been hearing about all of the wonderful wildlife other sailors have been recently seeing offshore here and further south. We are hoping for the same! The winds are forecast to be in our favor beginning this evening, early morning tomorrow. Finger are crossed and an offering will be made to Neptune.
That's all for now. Take care and thank you for following along on this journey with me.
XO
Cheryl
