One Last Sailing Hurrah in Baja!

Isla Espíritu Santo, and to the left is Isla Partida. Front and center in this photo is Bahia El Mezteño.

When I saw the opportunity to take Wahine Toa out again, with friends, to the nearby island of Espiritú Santo I took it! We had perfect weather, a lovely full moon, and starry, starry nights. Really, what more could one ask for? Okay, maybe a little more consistent wind but who’s complaining? Not me! The ladies and I had a great time.

Day one we took the dingy out to get close to a small pod of dolphins that were jumping and playing. It truly never gets old! At night the ladies cooked up a tasty meal and we relaxed under the stars. After a lazy morning we decided to switch anchorages. Unfortunately we had little to no wind so we motored an hour to arrive at El Mezteño, a small bay fitting only one or two small to medium sized boats. When we arrived we joined a catamaran but were able to anchor far enough away not to be rude. Luckily for us later that day they pulled up anchor and let us to enjoy the bay on our own. Muchas gracias amigos!!!

That night we watched the moon rise in all her glory. Even with the brightness of the moon we still were blessed with a good view of more stars then we could count. Also, we found Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn in virtually a straight line up the sky. So cool!

In the morning we took off in the dingy heading our little private beach and hiked up the arroyo. When I say ‘hiked’ I really mean ‘scrambled’. It’s was good exercise, for sure. Amazingly, I wore a pair of minimalist sandals called Earth Runners. I was pleasantly surprised to find they provided really good grip on the boulders I was traversing. My feet really are nudists and these sandals are awesome!

We pulled up anchor around noon and got underway. Again, no wind for sailing however the weather was perfect. Despite the cool temperatures we’ve had here in La Paz our weekend away was perfect! Even warm enough to inspire one last plunge into the Gulfo de California.

On Saturday February 11th I will depart Baja and embark on my next CherylSailsAway adventure, leaving Wahine Toa is the capable and loving hands of Bree, her new owner. (Read more about it ~ Here ~)

Stay tuned for more fun to come!
